Prime 5

Prime 5

Prime5 is a real-time advanced process control platform. It allows the user to create robust solutions within a highly flexible environment. Limitations of the control base layer often oblige the implementation of advanced control strategies. Some of these limitations are:
  • Long dead times,
  • Interaction between variables due to the multi-variable nature of processes, and
  • Constraints (e.g. trying to accommodate two control objectives such as downstream stability and level control)

A typical solution would run on a standalone computer communicating via OPC to a PLC that is connected to the field instrumentation of the process.

Some of the features of Prime include:
  • Multi-variable model predictive controller - Uses quadratic programming to calculate the optimum inputs to a plant to maintain targets while satisfying satisfy constraints
  • PID controller - A proportional–integral–derivative controller
  • Scripting - User defined code that is compiled at runtime and gives the user full flexibility including seamless integration of external libraries developed in .Net
  • Simulation - Test your control solutions in simulation with linear models
  • Real-time trends - Speeds up controller tuning
  • MIMO model editor - Easily create models for a multi-dimensional plant
  • OPC client - OPC data access client that accesses plant data via an OPC server
  • OLE DB client - interrogate a database through simple SQL queries
  • Remote block reader - Access data on other Prime projects on the same computer or on any other computer reachable over a network
  • Open format - All configuration information transparently stored in XML for simplified access by external applications

The workspace designer is the main configuration menu of Prime5.

The user builds a projects by drag and dropping function blocks from a toolbox. Each function block has its own configuration menu. Shown below is the configuration menu of the QDMC (model predictive controller) function block:

The user can change the controller plant model with the help of the SISO model editor:

Once all the blocks are configured, the user can download the project to the Prime5 Engine (a Windows service):
